Maxim Naumov Expresses Deep Gratitude for Support After Tragic Plane Crash That Killed His Parents

By Natasha Dye | March 4, 2025 | PEOPLE

Figure skater Maxim Naumov has shared an emotional message of gratitude following the overwhelming support he has received after the tragic loss of his parents—1994 World Figure Skating Champions Evgenia “Zhenya” Shishkova and Vadim Naumov—in a plane crash near Washington, D.C.

“I am truly at a loss for words to express the depth of my gratitude and love for each and every one of you,” Maxim, 23, wrote on Instagram on March 4. “Every embrace, message, call, and prayer has touched me in ways I can’t fully describe, and I am beyond grateful for your kindness and support.”

His heartfelt message came just two days after he broke down in tears while honoring his parents at the Legacy on Ice tribute event.

A Heartfelt Tribute on Ice

On March 2, Maxim joined fellow skaters in paying tribute to the 28 members of the figure skating community who were on American Airlines Flight 5342 when it collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29.

The event, held at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., raised funds through the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation’s Legacy on Ice program to support the victims’ families and first responders.

During his emotional performance, Maxim skated onto the ice holding two white roses, which he placed on a memorial table filled with flowers and candles. In a poignant moment, he later held up a candle and left the ice with fellow skaters as the audience applauded in solidarity.

“Your love has filled my heart so profoundly that it brings tears to my eyes,” Maxim wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for standing by me during the most difficult time of my life.”

Loss, Legacy, and Moving Forward

Maxim’s parents were among several skaters returning to Washington, D.C., from the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp in Wichita, Kansas. Maxim had also competed there, finishing fourth in the senior men’s division at the U.S. National Championships just days before the tragedy.

Authorities have confirmed that the bodies of all 67 victims have been recovered.
