January 5, 2024 by Pham Hien

dig your own gems right here in Nevada and these destinations are an experience you’re sure to cherish (pun intended).

It may not be obvious to most, but tonopah is a turquoise paradise.
Based in the Great Basin Desert, the Otteson family is particularly known as the region’s largest producer of turquoise.
As operators of some of the most productive mines in the state, the Otteson family is happy to conduct turquoise mine tours for interested visitors and enthusiastic hobbyists.
In fact, this family-owned “gem” located in the middle of one of Nevada’s most austere landscapes is one of Nevada’s only turquoise mines, as well as one of the few remaining mines open to the public.
tours typically run twice a week from April to October.
All tours depart from Giggles Gas Station in tonopah.
Keep in mind that mining can be a dangerous activity and may not be for everyone.
If you choose not to dig, don’t worry.
Rare finds like these are an iconic symbol of the treasures that can be found in Nevada with a little determination (and a little muscle).

Mining in Nevada has played a major role in our state’s history for over a century now.
