US singer Bruce Springsteen has said the music industry ‘puts enormous pressures on young people’ after Liam Payne‘s death in Argentina.

The One Direction singer, 31, plunged 45ft from the third floor into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Telegraph, the legendary musician, 75, said: ‘That’s not an unusual thing in my business.

‘It’s a normal thing. It’s a business that puts enormous pressures on young people.

‘Young people don’t have the inner facility or the inner self yet to be able to protect themselves from a lot of the things that come with success and fame.

‘So they get lost in a lot of the difficult and often pain-inducing (things)… whether it’s drugs or alcohol to take some of that pressure off.’

He added that he understands this ‘very well’ from his own experience, as he has done his ‘own wrestling with different things’.

Springsteen detailed his depression in the memoir Born To Run, and has said he came ‘close to the abyss’.

Liam was outspoken about how the global fame of One Direction changed his life and affected his relationship with drugs and alcohol, once admitting: ‘I don’t know if I’ve hit rock bottom yet.’

Speaking to Stephen Bartlett on the Diary Of The CEO Podcast in 2021, Liam, admitted: ‘I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where’s rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I’m very good at hiding it’.

‘I don’t even know if I have hit it yet. I can either make that choice now and pick my last moment as my rock bottom or I can make a whole new low.’

He admitted he had suffered for years with ‘social anxiety’ and ‘stress’ from being famous, and discussed the pressure his mental health was under while not having the freedom to go anywhere as a boyband member.

Meanwhile he also admitted he was ‘quite lucky to be here still’ while speaking to Ant Middleton on his Straight Talking programme in 2019.

He added: ‘There’s times where that level of loneliness and people getting into you every day every so often… it’s like, ‘When will this end?’… that’s almost nearly killed me a couple of times.’

Argentinian prosecutors said investigations into Liam’s fall are so far ‘inconclusive’.

He died of multiple traumas and ‘internal and external haemorrhage’, a post-mortem examination found.

Liam plunged 45ft from the third floor into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in Argentina’s capital on Wednesday, before medics confirmed his death.

How Liam Payne spent his final days before tragic death in Argentina

The star had arrived in South America with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy on September 30, staying in Argentina for two weeks after only planning to spend ‘five days’ there .

Police were called to the hotel following reports of an ‘aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol’.

Shortly afterwards, workers heard a loud sound in the hotel’s courtyard before the Wolverhampton-born singer’s body was discovered just after 5pm local time.

Shocked fans gathered outside after police cordoned off the area with forensic investigators seen entering and exiting in white protective suits and blue gloves.

The star was said to have been ‘acting erratically in the hotel lobby and smashed his laptop’ before he ‘had to be carried back to his room’, according to local media.
