Donald Trump called India a “dead economy,” but Australia swiftly countered, saying New Delhi is brimming with “golden opportunities.

Australia counters Donald Trump's 'dead economy' dig at India: '…fantastic opportunities'

While former U.S. President Donald Trump shocked many by labeling India a “dead economy,” Australia has quickly fired back, expressing strong support for New Delhi.

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell stated: “We see India as a country of fantastic opportunities. Like Australia, India is a thriving democracy, and we want to deepen our partnership to boost two-way trade and investment.”

His remarks came just a day after Foreign Minister Penny Wong criticized the Trump administration’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on Indian goods — the harshest rate among America’s trade partners.

Farrell went further, emphasizing that Australia is eager to invest in India’s key projects, from Adani’s mining ventures in Queensland to uranium exports. He also highlighted India’s critical role in global supply chains, particularly in strategic minerals and rare earths.

“Australia is often described as the lucky country because of our vast reserves of critical minerals and rare earths. We want to share that good fortune with the people of India to strengthen supply chains,” he added.

Canberra’s stance marks a sharp contrast to Washington’s, especially as the U.S. doubles down on trade restrictions against New Delhi over its purchases of Russian oil. While Trump opts for punitive tariffs, Australia is embracing collaboration, viewing India as a key partner in its long-term economic strategy.
