“The world mourns the loss of the ‘nicest judge alive,’ who has passed away at the age of 88. Celebrated for his fairness, compassion, and dedication to justice, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy that touched countless lives. Tributes pour in from around the globe honoring his kindness and integrity.”
Frank Caprio, the beloved U.S. judge who rose to international fame as the star of Caught in Providence and became affectionately known as “the nicest judge in the world,” has died at the age of 88, his family announced.
Caprio passed away following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. His death was confirmed on his official Instagram account, where he was remembered for his “warmth” and his “unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”
“His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” the statement to his 3.4 million followers read, adding that his life was defined by “countless acts of kindness he inspired.”
Judge Caprio became a household name thanks to his long-running television program Caught in Providence, which showcased his compassionate and humorous approach to justice in the courtroom. The show’s viral clips—ranging from heartwarming moments with children to leniency for struggling families—garnered billions of views across social media platforms, turning him into an unlikely global celebrity.
His son, David Caprio, thanked fans for their outpouring of love and support, encouraging them to honor his father’s memory by continuing to “spread a little kindness.”
The company behind Caught in Providence, Debmar-Mercury, praised Caprio for bringing a “unique brand of compassion and common sense” to the bench.
“We will miss him dearly,” co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a statement.
Over its run, Caught in Providence was nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards, while Judge Caprio himself received two nominations last year, cementing his reputation not only as a respected jurist but also as a beloved television personality.
Part of Caprio’s charm was his approachable style. From inviting children to sit with him behind the bench to unveiling a “mini-judge” plushie in his likeness, he consistently balanced authority with humor and kindness.
A TikTok video of his simple morning routine—brushing his teeth, signing his book, and watching clips of his own show—drew over 5 million views, illustrating the breadth of his online influence.
In a 2019 interview, Caprio reflected on his courtroom’s appeal: “It shows a slice of life of Rhode Island that is very interesting, and it reflects the same issues people are experiencing nationwide.”
In 2023, Caprio revealed he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, vowing to fight “as hard as I can.” Even as his health declined, he kept fans updated, candidly sharing his struggles and asking for prayers in his final posts.
Despite the illness, he remained optimistic and grateful for the overwhelming support he received from millions around the world.
Away from the spotlight, Caprio was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Judge Frank Caprio leaves behind more than a distinguished legal career—he leaves a legacy of compassion, humor, and humanity that touched lives far beyond the courtroom. For many, he redefined what justice could look like: fair, merciful, and deeply human.
As fans and admirers mourn his passing, his own words and example serve as a lasting reminder: kindness can be the most powerful form of justice.
