Deion Hankins Injury Update: Bears Rookie RB Limps Off After Preseason Hit vs. Bills.L1

August 18, 2025 by Truc Ly

The Chicago Bears’ second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills delivered a mix of highs and lows. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams impressed with a crisp opening touchdown drive, but the excitement quickly turned to concern when running back Deion Hankins was forced out of the game after a hard hit.

What Happened on the Play

Hankins, an undrafted free agent signing this summer, was attempting to adjust to a pass from Williams on the left side of the field when he was struck from behind. The collision left the rookie limping toward the sideline, clearly favoring his left leg.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reported on X:

“Deion Hankins got hit hard from behind trying to adjust his body to a ball that came a little bit behind him. Britton Brown replaces him. Looks like Hankins was favoring his left leg as he hobbled off the field.”

Britton Brown immediately stepped in to take Hankins’ place in the backfield.

Why It Matters

Hankins entered training camp as a long shot to make the Bears’ roster but was given a genuine opportunity to compete in Ben Johnson’s system. Johnson, who coordinated the Detroit Lions’ top-ranked offense last season, values a dual-back setup, and Chicago’s depth behind new starter D’Andre Swift remains unsettled.

With that uncertainty, Hankins was hoping preseason action would secure him a role. In the Bears’ first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, he logged seven carries for 23 yards and added a four-yard reception, showing flashes of versatility.

Now, the injury could derail his chances, leaving Kyle Monangai as the likely RB2 option behind Swift heading into the regular season.

Hankins’ Background

Hankins played six seasons of college football, splitting time between UTEP and Texas State. At UTEP, he twice earned Second-Team All-Conference USA honors and was known for his power-running style. Last season at Texas State, he recorded 272 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 62 carries.

For Hankins, the preseason was supposed to be a proving ground — an opportunity to carve out a spot in a crowded Bears backfield. Instead, his injury has cast doubt on his immediate future with the team.

The Bears have yet to release an official update on Hankins’ status, but his health will be closely monitored as Chicago trims its roster ahead of Week 1.
