The devastating news from Camp Mystic left the nation speechless. While millions prayed, Chicago Cubs baseball star Pete Crow-Armstrong quietly did the unexpected. But when his handwritten letter was released, fans across America were shocked…

Last week’s devastating flash floods in Texas left devastating consequences, but nothing was more heartbreaking than the official announcement from rescuers: All 14 girls at Camp Mystic were killed after floodwaters suddenly surged into the area in the middle of the night.

The victims were all young girls between the ages of 10 and 14 who were attending the annual summer camp in the Hill Country. The tragedy shook America — and especially the sports community.

Immediately after receiving the news, Pete Crow-Armstrong, the talented young outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, quietly donated $500,000 to support funeral expenses, provide emotional support for the victims’ families, and build a small memorial at Camp Mystic.

However, what brought tears to fans’ eyes was a handwritten letter he sent to each family:

“I don’t know each of your names, but I’ve seen your faces in the pictures – your smiles are so beautiful. I write this not as an athlete, but as a human being. As someone who was once a kid, who ran on the field, who dreamed big dreams. And today, I am heartbroken because your dreams are no longer there.”

The letter ended with a scribbled line, written in a shaky handwriting:

“I will never forget you. Every time I step on the field, I will carry your smiles in my heart.”

Online community: “You were the light in the darkest days”
The letter was shared by a victim’s family on social media and immediately went viral at a dizzying speed. Tens of thousands of comments were left below, including one fan who wrote:

“You are not just a player, you are a hero to broken hearts.”

Pete Crow-Armstrong did not hold a press conference. There was no media statement. All of his actions took place in silence – but its influence is immeasurable.

With his humanitarian actions, PCA helped raise more than $3 million in just 72 hours, to provide long-term support for families and to upgrade flood warning systems at Texas summer camps.

In the competitive 2025 MLB season, there were resounding homeruns, thrilling victories. But Pete Crow-Armstrong’s actions reminded the world that: heroes do not necessarily have to be winners. But is the one who knows how to stand by those who are in pain.
