Christina Perri Reflects on ‘A Thousand Years’ Becoming a Wedding Staple for Twilight Fans
Christina Perri embraces the lasting impact of her hit song, A Thousand Years, as it continues to be a favorite for weddings and lullabies alike.
On the March 6 episode of The Nikki & Brie Show, the 38-year-old singer-songwriter joined hosts Nikki and Brie Garcia to discuss the evolution of her beloved track—from its origins in The Twilight Saga to becoming a wedding anthem and, later, a cherished lullaby.
A Song Born from Twilight
Perri originally wrote A Thousand Years for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 in 2011. A devoted Twilight fan herself, she recalled being thrilled to create a song specifically for the film’s wedding scene.
“I really was a Twilight fan. I have to admit I was more of a Twihard. I was, like, a hardcore fan,” Perri said. “I wrote this song for the movie, and it was very specific. They showed me the film and said, ‘We need a song for the wedding scene.’ So I made it a waltz.”
Although her song was chosen, it ultimately played during the film’s credits instead of the wedding scene. Still, Perri called the experience “the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me,” given her love for the franchise, which stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner.
From Twilight to Wedding Aisles
After Breaking Dawn – Part 2 premiered in 2012, Twilight fans expressed their love for the song and its connection to Bella and Edward’s love story.
“Fans really wanted it in the final movie,” Perri shared. “They knew I was a Twihard, and they made the song a single for the film. That was really cool.”
As Twilight fans started getting married, the song took on a new life. “All of a sudden, it wasn’t just about Twilight anymore—it became a wedding song. People were walking down the aisle to it, having their first dances to it. I thought that was amazing.”
A Song That Keeps Evolving
Over time, A Thousand Years continued to grow in significance. As many of the same fans who had married to the song began having children, it found a new role as a lullaby.
“This song just keeps living its own life and evolving,” Perri said. “Everyone who got married to it started having babies at the same time as me, and now they’re playing my lullabies to their kids. I feel like a part of their story in some of the most special moments of their lives.”
Perri, who shares daughters Pixie Rose and Carmella Stanley with husband Paul Costabile, even wrote a children’s book inspired by A Thousand Years.
Grateful for the Journey
Reflecting on the song’s ongoing legacy, Perri expressed deep gratitude.
“It just feels like the most natural progression. It’s the gift that keeps on giving,” she said. “This song has its own life.”
And despite its evolution, Perri remains a Twilight fan at heart. “They are my people! Anytime the movies are on TV, I’m not changing the channel. If I’m in a hotel and it’s on, it’s a must-watch!”
